Dr. Garni joined the faculty at Kansas State University in 2008. Her substantive interests include international development, migration, and social change. Dr. Garni recently completed a comparative study examining how non-migrants in Latin America pursue development given distinctive socio-historical conditions and similar patterns of mass migration to the U.S. In other recent work that will appear in a forthcoming Russell Sage anthology on the Migration Industry (edited by Rubén Hernández-León) she examines the developmental impact that viajeras (women who work as international couriers) have on the communities they serve in El Salvador, and why viajeras are disproportionately active in some parts of the country and not in others. Last fall, a peer-reviewed article that Dr. Garni co-authored with Arpi Miller appeared in The Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies. This work, entitled “Localized Immigration Policy and Migrant Life Experiences: The Case of Mexican Migrants in Southern California,” was the culmination of exploratory research conducted in collaboration with the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) on global migration regimes. Collaboration included a presentation by Dr. Garni at a conference for international scholars at ELIAMEP in Athens, Greece. At KSU, Dr. Garni has taught graduate and undergraduate courses on Ethnic and Racial Relations, International Development, and Introductory Sociology.
