Assistant Professor of Sociology
Ph.D., Sociology, Georgia State University, 2008
Interests: Gender, Globalization, Migration, Social Movements, Institutional Ethnography

Dr. Shapkina’s research interests are related to the studies of gender, migration, and globalization. She studies how contemporary social problems increasingly transcend national boundaries and how governments, international organizations, and social movements initiate, coordinate, and negotiate their responses to these global social problems. Currently, she examines the problem of sex trafficking of women from the former Soviet countries and analyzes anti-trafficking campaigns in the post-Soviet region and transnationally.
