Program Requirements
A.) Students must complete a minimum of 60-63 credit hours of Ph.D. work beyond the Master's degree: 30-33 hours of course work and 30 hours of dissertation research.
B.) Students with a master's degree at another institution or in another field may have master's level courses evaluated to determine if they are equivalent to courses required in the Ph.D. curriculum. Students requesting a waiver from any requirement must supply the course syllabus or other supporting information to the graduate coordinator for evaluation by the appropriate faculty.
C.) Elective courses (beyond required hours in the core and two areas of concentration) may be taken to strengthen one's background in any core or concentration area, or to broaden one's training as determined by the student, the major professor, and the supervisory committee. Also included might be tool courses such as computer courses, language study, or support courses in other fields.
D.) All Ph.D. students must take preliminary examinations in two areas of concentration and may be required to take examinations in Theory and Methods.
Core Curriculum
All Ph.D. students must fulfill the 15 hour core curriculum requirement. The hours may be taken at either the Master's or Ph.D. level. Students are required to take:

Areas of concentration are organized under 3 clusters that reflect the broader intellectual foundations and paradigms underpinning areas of concentration. Additional Areas
With the permission of the major professor and supervisory committee, a student may take courses and an examination in another area of concentration in which the faculty teach and conduct research. This area would substitute for one of the areas of concentration listed above. The student would be required to take a minimum of 9 hours in the approved area. Such areas include (but are not limited to): Research Methods, Environmental Sociology, and Social Theory.
Ph.D. Preliminary Examinations
Upon completing the required 30-33 hours of course work beyond the M.A. degree, Ph.D. students must take preliminary examinations in a minimum of two areas of concentration. Preliminary examinations in the core areas of theory and methods may also be required if a student's performance in the core theory or methods courses is deemed to be substandard.
The Doctoral Dissertation
Once all preliminary examinations are completed, Ph.D. students must successfully complete a doctoral dissertation in order to complete degree requirements.
Typical Ph.D. Program of Study

Fifth and subsequent semesters (1-12 hrs. per semester) - SOCIO 999 Ph.D. Dissertation Research
Students must take a total of 30 hrs. of SOCIO 999 while completing their dissertation research.
